Day 90 – Make like a Tree

“Why don’t you make like a tree and slowly grow while helping others around you too.” – Twitter user, @tinyobscurae

There are always those sayings in life that get stuck in your head from movies, friends, parents, etc. I always thought that was so interesting, one of the sayings you hear is “make like a tree and leaf!” Now obviously this is just a funny (dare I say punny) saying but its something most of us are familiar with but until today I didn’t know where it came from. I researched it and although it’s claimed to have been said all the way back in the 1940s, it was made famous by Back to the Future & Back to the Future II. Why am I telling you this information? I just find it fascinating that we all use sayings like this without ever knowing where it came from.

My experience with this phenomenon is something less popular and yet something my father used to always say and we still say. We always use the phrase “tight like a tiger” whenever something may not fit in a space, such as a couch through a door opening. I said it for 15+ years without ever knowing where it was from. Within the past 6 months, I was watching Austin Powers Goldmember and I heard the saying used. It was an AH-HA moment and a funny conversation with my Dad. He then gave me another saying we use all the time “two dollars… two dollars…” which is from a movie I still have never seen called Better Off Dead. It’s just kind of fun to realize that sometimes we just say things that other people say without even ever having experienced the same memory as them but in turn, still create our own memory and connection with other people through phrases.

The quote of the day is a much better quote than it’s original version “make like a tree and leaf”. It’s something we can all learn from. Growth should not come at other people’s expense and instead, should help those around you as well. This is the idea of the leader vs. boss concept put more simply in a nice saying. Regardless of the saying, my challenge for you is the next time you use or hear a common saying, do your research and figure out if it’s something original from a family member, something from a movie, or if it’s something from history that has just been passed down.

Item 090 of 360+

Today’s item is a Funko Pop of Crowley from Supernatural. In the show, he is the devil and that is why he had a red-eye exclusive version of himself. Since today has been all about sayings, I figured it would be fun to share some of the best things he said in the show to end the post. “The name’s Crowley.”, “I love it when you talk dirty”, “That’s what you get, working with a demon.”, “I torture all my friends. That’s how I show love.” and finally, “Bollocks!”
