Day 60 – A Weekend of Less

“It takes discipline not to let social media steal your time.” -Alexis Ohanian

“Distracted from distraction by distraction.” -T.S. Eliot

This past weekend, as promised, I did not go on social media and I deleted Tik Tok. The most surprising outcome to me is I really didn’t even notice it. What’s bothering me is how is that possible? How can I take away something that distracts me for hours on end and not even notice it’s missing? Without social media being available, I just did productive things, enjoyed some more quality time with Amalia and my parents and had more free time to do things I actually wanted to do. I removed the distraction and well, I didn’t get distracted. It is not my goal to belittle social media, I know it’s a voice for people and I also know it helps our website get noticed. It’s just for me and for anyone else struggling with over usage, it’s not worth it. The real question is, do the positives outweigh the negatives? For me, they do not so I will continue to have very limited social media use from now on.

So how does one go about doing a weekend cleanse? For starters, remove the apps from a thumbs reach to get rid of the normal path to your social media. In fact, now it’s not even on my home screen anymore, I have it hidden in my app library. The other big move is to just turn off notifications, without notifications there is really no reason to navigate to the sites. Going on for leisure every once in a while to see what people are up to is what it’s meant for and that’s how I intend to use it from now on. There is no need from instant likes or answers, if someone needs me they can call or text me. If this helped one other person, I’m glad I shared my weekend’s results.

Item 060 of 360+

We were able to get a free upgrade in dining room chairs last week which left us with extra old chairs. Amalia and I have a basement for storage of these types of items so there is always the temptation of saving them, just in case. Instead, we will ask around to see if anyone needs them and if the answer is no, they will become firewood when the weather breaks. You may see another round of chairs in the near future.
